Veterans Day

There is much to be grateful for in this country because of service men and women who have answered a call to stand proudly for their country and stand strong for their freedoms.  But, if there is one thing about the USA that I am most grateful for, it would have to be possibility. Of course this country serves up a big dish of inequality, injustice and glass ceilings. I am not being naive here.

But, that is humanity. Human nature seems to gravitate towards the destruction of ideals. That is not our constitution's fault.
What I am talking about is the possibility that comes from the words:

Liberty, Justice, For ALL.

Those are fighting words. People, humanity, institutions fight that ideal in so many ways. And yet, we live in a country that was founded on that dream. That is an amazing thing to consider.

It is easy to get discouraged as Americans. Especially when we look around and see how far from that ideal we have drifted (or maybe never really even started at), but I don't want that to take away from the beauty of the dream. I want my kids to know what possibility is, I want them to know that there are things out there that are worth fighting for, even if the battle looks bleak.  I want them to see the American flag and see possibility.

My Veterans Day wish is that all those who have served or are serving, or will one day serve know that I appreciate what they have done in the name of possibility.

Because it is the freedom we call possibility that I am ever so thankful for today.
