The following post is really long, it is really delayed and it is jam packed with random fun. I started the week genuinely bummed we didn't have "vacation" plans, but it all worked out. Next year though, at least one of you needs to come out and Fall Break with us!!! Consider the following pictures my attempt to entice you to book some tickets!! We have a spare room, a spare car... COME!
Tuesday 10.08.13: The long weekend passed and Daddy went back to work. (Boo on work weeks!!) We cleaned house and shopped, recovering from that Pill Box trek. Let me tell you how much I would rather take my three little ducks on a hike in the jungle before taking them on a shopping trip to the newly reopened Commissary (ie the on-base grocery store that was temporarily closed due to the government shut down/nonsense in Washington). However, my children's pleasant in-store attitudes midst the Commissary rush, did warrant a post-nap trip to Hickam Beach later that afternoon. We took neighbor B-Town. The boys loved having a "big boy" to run and chase with on the beach. He added a whole new element of fun to the afternoon!
Wednesday 10.09.13:
Today I was itching again to get off base. We headed to Kailua and tried a new area of the beach there. Kailua is hands down my favorite part of the island so far. I love it. The only thing that would make it better would be if we had a house there...
...preferably right here, next to Hayden on the beach.
I had my first beach scare today. The kids had already gotten into the water, when I finally had the opportunity to take in the size of the waves. It was some of the roughest water I have seen so far. People were surfing right off shore. Well, by the time it had registered I noticed Hayden floating out on his boogie board. I called for him to come back in, and with a slightly panicked expression he yelled that he couldn't. Of course this gets my adrenaline flowing and I toss B-Town the baby and head out there after him Only to discover that he is literally in only 20 inches of water and could have walked back to shore!!! What a relief. But we were able to have a good discussion on ocean safety. The whole incident made me even more determined to get over my whole drowning in the ocean fear and get comfortable in the water. UGH.
There is B-Town showing off his boogie skilz!
See, baby girl does have SOME hair!
Our Kailua "home" for the day.
Those waves were no joke.
Funny how dangerous beauty can be, isn't it?
As a post-beach treat we biked up to the Shoppette (on-base gas station/convenience store) for some fruit bars.
As a side note, I really do like it here, but I am not going to lie. It is really stinking hot... pretty much ALL OF THE TIME. I am chronically sweaty. TMI? Maybe, but I feel it important to give you all the details. Even the sweaty, smelly ones. You are welcome.
And then there is baby girl sayin',
"What the heck is this deal? Where is my frozen bar?! I am hot too, darn it! I am so stinkin' sweaty I am not even wearing pants!!! GIVE ME SOME!!!!"
Thursday 10.10.13:
Today we treated the pups to a trip to the dog beach. They loved it. Of course.
Friday 10.11.13:
Today I (finally!) got to talk with the BFF De. She is having a baby any day now. It is her second baby and yet again, I am not going to be there. It makes me sad. Missing out on that sort of thing is the exact sort of thing I can't start thinking about. So I will stop writing about it. But it is there, always in the back of my mind.
We chatted while the kids and I drove to the Laundromat. My king sized comforter was in serious need of washing. It still smelled like the moving truck/ship because (embarrassing confession ahead) I still had not washed it since unpacking it FIVE months ago. TOTALLY GROSS. Feel free to judge! I am judging myself as I type this. Anyhow, waiting in the hot, sweaty laundromat, with three hot sweaty children really put into perspective how BLESSED I am to have a washer and dryer. There are so many, many momma's out there that have to gather their kids on a consistent basis, make their way to the laundromat and wash all their clothes in that hot, sweaty, BORING place. Can you imagine on top of that, having to take your kids and laundry to the laundromat ON A BUS?! People do it. And I have deep respect for them because of it. After just one trip, attempting to get my comforter washed (not even dried!) I was ready to throw the thing in the trash and just buy a new one!!!
After completing that MISadventure we decided on a pool day. Daddy even got off early and met us there! WE LOVE THE POOL! Even if we can only make it for 30 minutes, we will go to cool off. The pool staff here is becoming my surrogate Briargate YMCA. They know us, know our kids and I feel safe and welcome there. EVERYONE needs that kind of place. If you don't have that, work hard to find it... somewhere, anywhere. I promise it is worth it.
Saturday 10.12.13
I got up at 3:55 this morning in an attempt to race-day register for a half-marathon in Honolulu. Turned out it cost $80, so Bubblewrap Bobbit (my running partner in crime) and I, just decided to run another 12 mile route nearby. It was awesome. Early morning running has become my new favorite thing. Plus it makes your post-run, morning Starbucks (AND Jamba Juice smoothie) taste that much better!
That afternoon we met up with my two new favorite Minnesotans turned Hawaiians. They are expert island adventurers and took us on an amazingly wonderful hike!!![]() |

Columbus Day
Monday 10.14.13: We made our third trip up to the North Shore today. However, it was our first time on the beach and our first... SEA TURTLE SIGHTING!!! Two of them! Just sunning themselves right on the sand. People here will say it is not that big of a deal, that you can find them regularly and often more than just two at a time. But it was our first wild sighting and they were awesome. I hope it always stays a special experience for me. Such awesome beauty.
Tuesday 10.15.13: We ended Fall Break 2013 with a trip to Ko' Olina, the vacation rental lagoons on the leeward side of the island. Our hope was to meet some friends out there from Hayden's school, but it didn't work out. We played in the water, picnicked AND made it home for late naps. An adventure day AND a nap day. A momma's dream. A delightful end to a fun week off.
